How can I support a healthy brain?

There are a variety of nutrients that help support your brain and cognition. The B vitamins (such as Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 and B6) help brain and body cells produce the energy they need to function. Choline is needed by the brain and nervous system to regulate memory, mood, muscle control and other functions. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are macular carotenoids that help support the retina of your eye, and because they accumulate in the brain, they are sometimes used in brain supplements. And the Omega-3 fatty acid DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) helps support a healthy brain.†

What foods can help support a healthy brain?

If you eat a well-balanced diet, one that has a mix of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and lean proteins, then you’ll get some good sources of nutrients and vitamins for brain health. Specifically, the B vitamins are found in dark leafy greens, meat, eggs and legumes. Choline is found in eggs, meat, and fish. The Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and sardines. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are found in leafy green vegetables. However, if you find it hard to obtain these nutrients from your food alone, you may want to consider additional nutritional support.†
